Woman claims ex-lover raped her as children slept nearby
A woman awoke to find her former partner in her bed raping her while her two children slept in the same room, a court has heard.
The man, who can't be named to protect the identity of his former partner, denies a total of 10 charges, including three of rape, two of sexual assault, false imprisonment, trespass with intent to rape and false imprisonment.
Prosecutor Kate McKay told the Belfast Crown Court jury that although the relationship between the 22-year-old Co Antrim man and woman had ended years before, they were still often in contact with one another as they had young children together.
This was the situation in May last year when the accused was allowed to sleep over in her home.
Ms McKay said although the man was supposed to sleep on the sofa, his former partner awoke to find him in her bed raping her. Later the woman claims she tried to prevent him getting back into the house but he allegedly forced his way back in.
Following his arrest the man claimed the sexual contact between them was consensual.
