Woman held after man (51) is stabbed

A 51-year-old man is in a serious condition in hospital after he was stabbed in an attack in Londonderry yesterday afternoon.

The PSNI are investigating a serious assault in the Francis Street area of the city shortly before 1.30pm.

The man was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital for treatment to his injuries which were described as “serious”.

A 34-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

She was being questioned by police last night.

It is the second serious knife attack in Derry in the past few days.

In an unrelated incident, a 56-year-old man in the Waterside area of the city was fatally injured in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Father-of-two Chris McGaughey from Celadine Court in Gobnascale died after he was stabbed in the stomach at Hollymount Park. A 31-year-old man is still being questioned over the killing.
