A community has been left in shock after a vicious assault left a Londonderry woman in a serious condition in hospital.

The attack on the woman, who is understood to be from the area, happened shortly after 10am on Tuesday in the Top of the Hill area of the Waterside.

Sinn Fein councillor Christopher Jackson said: “The people of the Top of the Hill are extremely concerned that a woman was set upon like this and are shocked that it took place in broad daylight.

“It is of extreme concern that this was the work of a gang and people are quite rightly worried.

“I understand her injuries are quite serious and she remains in hospital.”

It is known that a number of masked men were involved and the woman sustained serious injuries.

Chief Inspector Ivor Morton said a motive remained under investigation and appealed for information.

He added: “We would like to hear from anyone who saw men going to or coming from the house between 9.30am and 10.30am.”

The number to call is 101 or the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
