Woman punched in face by carjacker

A woman in her 50s has been punched in the face during a car hijacking.

The attack happened in the Norglen Parade area of west Belfast during the early hours of yesterday.

Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) detective inspector Jenna Fitzpatrick said: "At around 4am a 59-year-old woman was removing items from a silver Vauxhall Astra when she was approached by an unknown male.

"This male spoke to her briefly before punching her in the face and taking her car keys.

"The male then made off in the vehicle in the direction of the Springfield Road."

Police pursued the stolen car which was deliberately crashed into their patrol vehicle.

Ms Fitzpatrick added: "The stolen Astra was spotted by police on Stockmans Lane a short time later and pursued by a trained PSNI pursuit driver into Brittons Parade where it reversed into the police vehicle a number of times before making off."

The car was later recovered in the Whiterock area of Belfast and has been taken away for forensic examination.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact detectives at Woodbourne police station on the non-emergency 101 number.
