Woman raped in Belfast's university area - man released on bail after questioning

A 25 year old man, arrested on suspicion of rape following the report of a serious sexual assault in the University Street area of south Belfast in the early hours of Tuesday 7th March, has been released on police bail pending further enquiries

A 25-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of rape following the report of a serious sexual assault in the University Street area of Belfast in the early hours of Tuesday March 7, has been released on police bail pending further enquiries

Police said the woman, aged in her 20s, was seriously sexually assaulted by a man in the doorway of a commercial premises just after 12.40am.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact officer on 101 quoting reference number 19 07/03/17. Information can also be given anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Alliance MLA for south Belfast Paula Bradshaw said: “This was an horrific attack and my thoughts are with the victim at this difficult time.

“We must ensure our streets are safe and a joined-up approach must be taken to combat this problem, particularly in this area of South Belfast where a number of incidents have taken place over recent years. 

“I would urge anyone who may have seen anything or who has information on the incident to contact police immediately."
