A woman has been attacked at a shopping centre in Downpatrick, Co Down.

It's understood the attack happened after 9am on Thursday morning.

She was attacked during an attempted robbery in the Grove Shopping Centre in the Lower Market Street area.

Police said they received a report that a woman was approached by an unknown man who attempted to wrestle her handbag from her.

It is believed the woman may have been stabbed during the attack.

SDLP councillor Colin McGrath describing the attempted robbery as a "callous attack".

"'It appears that this attack was against a woman who was going about her business at the local Post Office," he said.

"This type of attack in such a public place and during the day time in our Main Street is extremely worrying and totally reckless. My thoughts are with the victim and her family at this difficult time."

He appealed for anyone with information about the attack to come forward.
