Woman’s death ‘unnecessary’

Published 03/02/2011

Robin Newton, a Junior Minister with responsibility for older people, says the unnecessary death of 73 year-old Portaferry resident Noreen Troupe from hypothermia confirms the need to prioritise the protection of vulnerable people.

“This case is another demonstration of an elderly person dying too soon,” he said. “Her untimely death from the cold weather highlights the dilemma of many elderly in our community and stresses the need for raising the plight of vulnerable persons at the highest levels of Government.

“The appointment of a Commissioner for Older People will help raise the issues and push such matters higher up the political agenda. However, the greatest impact can be made by friends and neighbours rallying round to support.”
