A woman was trapped and beaten in her Co Down home by a vicious burglar as she struggled to escape.

The thug broke into the woman's home in Newcastle Street, Kilkeel, at around 7.45pm on Tuesday night and demanded money.

In a terrifying ordeal, the woman, who is in her 50s, was held hostage in the house by the burglar as he ransacked the property in a search for cash.

He assaulted her several times as she tried to get away from her assailant.

The victim received cuts and bruises to her head and body.

She eventually managed to escape after several attempts.

Her attacker made his getaway down the town's Campbell's Lane, in the direction of Mountain Road.

The burglar is described as being approximately 35-40 years of age, of medium build, 6ft tall, with short spiky hair - which may have been gelled, according to police sources.

The attacker is also said to have a slim face with gaunt cheeks and he was wearing a grey bomber jacket.

Nothing was stolen during the incident.

Detective Constable Nick Power is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident or anyone with information about the incident to contact Detectives in Ardmore on the non-emergency number 101.

Information can also be passed anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
