Workers unearth historic tunnel beneath Coleraine
A hole big enough to swallow a car has been opened up in the centre of one of Coleraine's main streets.
The chasm appeared as a utility company was excavating in the town's pedestrianised Kingsgate Street.
Local councillor Trevor Clark said: "While digging, the contractors found a walled tunnel, not far below the surface of the street."
The added that the hole was close to the historic town's walls and ramparts.
"This tunnel may be related to those defensive outworks," he said.
"There will certainly have to be an investigation."
