World renowned TEDx conference will return to Northern Ireland next month

By Christopher Woodhouse

Stormont will once again host the global conference of movers, shakers and opinion makers next month.

Leading thinkers from fields as diverse as politics, law, media, sport, science, entertainment, visual and performance art, music, and business will speak at Parliament Buildings as part of TEDx Stormont 2014.

Compered by broadcaster William Crawley, the event will feature 23 high profile individuals and performers from Northern Ireland and beyond in the Great Hall on September 5, sharing ideas with over 200 guests and viewers watching via a live stream.

The event successfully debuted last year with First Minister Peter Robinson, Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody and others addressing attendees.

From a four day conference in California over 26 years ago, TED and the TEDx programme has grown to support world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives.

TEDxStormont 2014 will be based on the theme of ‘Getting There’, with speakers talking for 18 minutes or less to share their ideas on how together as a society, we can overcome modern day challenges here in Northern Ireland and beyond.

Speaking at the launch of the event at Stormont, Finance Minister Simon Hamilton said: “Through the power of our ideas we can overcome the challenges of the 21st century and TEDxStormont presents a wonderful opportunity for us to hear from some fantastic folk from the worlds of politics, business, entertainment and beyond as they share their ideas”.
