Opinion

Viewpoint: Now everyone has been alienated

Confusion reigns among parents and teachers, still awaiting a definitive statement on the future of secondary education and wondering how to interpret the new timetable proposed for ending academic selection.

Viewpoint: Eyes of world focus on global tragedies

Mankind has no control over natural disasters, but the test for the countries affected is how quickly and efficiently they react to them — and how ready they are to accept international help. China is meeting the enormous challenge of a disastrous earthquake, while the generals of Burma have let their cyclone-ravaged people starve.

Why Ruane would drive Einstein mad

A new transfer system is due to be unveiled tomorrow, but Robert McCartney QC argues against what he calls useless reforms

Educational reformers in Northern Ireland claim that our children will be given a new education relevant to the 21st century, while many parents ask: " Why are they about to destroy a post primary system that is providing some of the best results in the United Kingdom?" Moreover, the proposed new education offers almost nothing novel, but contains much that has been tried, tested, and proved disastrous in both the United States and mainland Britain.

Abortion's so very sad, but some women really just don't have any other choice

It's a difficult and emotional issue, abortion. And it's come as no surprise to me that the four main parties here are opposed to abortion being made available to women in Northern Ireland. After all, it's only in recent times that we stopped putting 'bad girls' into homes and selling their babies to rich Americans.

Viewpoint: Historic case for historic times

It seems there is hardly a day goes past without history being made in the affairs of Northern Ireland. The latest development recalls one of the darkest days in the province's history, the Omagh bombing on August 15, 1998, when 29 people and unborn twins were killed.
