Viewpoint: Boss gig just the ticket
Monday, 26 November 2007
Aiken Promotions reveal in this newspaper today the steps they have taken to head off another fiasco over tickets to see Bruce Springsteen.
Fans of the Boss, and readers of this newspaper in general, will remember the summer hullabaloo when tickets for next month's Belfast gig sold out in moments.
Fanatical fans from GB and further afield deluged online and telephone agencies, leaving thousands of local people without the chance of a ticket. To rub salt in the wounds, dozens of tickets appeared for sale on eBay within minutes.
The Belfast Telegraph led the way in raising concerns about how tickets are allocated, pointing out that Springsteen had presumably chosen the Odyssey partly because of the incredible Belfast audiences.
We also reminded concert promoters that local people are their bread and butter for the rest of the year.
So, today, praise where praise is due. Peter Aiken has listened to the public. Not only has he secured a Dublin gig for the Boss next year, but he has introduced more counter sales and measures to limit the speculators.
If his strategy has the desired affect, fans of the Boss will at least have a fighting chance of obtaining a ticket to see their hero.
