Viewpoint: A marathon effort

Tuesday, 6 May 2008

They came in their thousands — 15,000, actually — and the sun smiled down on them.

For once, the weather was kind on the hardy souls who toiled for charity or for their own personal goals at the Belfast Marathon yesterday.

Everyone who entered the race — marathon, relay, fun run or any of the categories — are of course winners. But there is another set of winners and that is the city of Belfast.

As well as that, though, the marathon is about people taking responsibility for their own personal health.

Put bluntly: running is extremely good for you. It costs almost nothing, is perfect for losing weight and everyone can continue to improve even as they age in years.

And that is why the Belfast Telegraph today launches our RunHer promotion on page 13.

We want thousands of women to join us — running or walking — at the CIYMS 5K in Belfast on June 29.

To help you out, we will be running our own massive promotion over the next seven weeks.

There'll be free advice cards in the paper next week and we will run daily RunHer editorial pages packed with tips, advice, running diaries and training programmes.

So come and joins us, girls, it's a fun way to get fit.
