Viewpoint: A good result all round

And so United did it. But only after an inspired and honourable performance
by a team of worthy opponents.
It was a night loaded with significance, as Alex Ferguson's team hoisted the
European Cup above their shoulders in Moscow.
It will not go unnoticed that Man U won their third European Cup on George
Best's birthday. Or that it was last night that saw Ryan Giggs overtake
Munich air disaster survivor Sir Bobby Charlton's appearance record.
It will not go unnoticed, either, that Alex Ferguson — finally — won his
first-ever penalty shootout in a major competitive game.
Edwin van der Sar will, of course, go down in history as the hero of the
night, but the hearts of even United fans will go out to poor John Terry,
whose slip cost his team victory.
The other winner on the night was English Premiership football.
The first all-English Champions League final was a classic — a trial of
strength, skill and imagination from two truly great teams.
The fans, too, did their country credit with their boisterous but
good-natured approach. Even Moscow managed to reveal its cheery, relaxed
side.
United may have lifted the cup, but last night there were winners all round.
