Two men were today recovering after they were injured by a masked gang in a paramilitary-style attack in the Shankill area of Belfast.

The pair were targeted by three men wearing balaclavas who attacked them with baseball bats in Ainsworth sometime after 7.30pm.

The victims, who are both aged 21, were being treated in hospital and their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, police said.

Local DUP councillor Diane Dodds said people in the area do not want to be dragged back to the days of the Troubles.

"The details so far on what happened last night are still a bit sketchy.

"I will condemn the attack and all decent ordinary right thinking people in the Shankill will condemn it," she said.

"We want the Shankill area to be free from paramilitary and criminal activity.

"The area is full of new social and private housing - people are getting on with their lives and the last thing they need is to be dragged back to the Troubles."

Police said investigations were continuing.
