Police in Donegal have made a major seizure of firearms and ammunition.

Four pistols, two revolvers, two sawn-off shotguns and a quantity of ammunition were found during a planned search in the Carrigans area near Londonderry by Gardaí yesterday.

Two suspect devices, which were made safe by the Army bomb disposal team, were also found.

The seizures are part of an investigation in to serious crime in Donegal.

No arrests were made.

SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has praised the Gardai for their efforts.

He said: “I commend the Gardai on how they handled this dangerous operation.

“People will be relieved that these lethal weapons have been taken out of the hands of dissident republicans.

“These terrorists are intent on carrying on a conflict that has seen so many lives being lost in the past.

“Those responsible for preparing these bombs have no consideration or respect for others and have no mandate to carry out these attacks which ultimately result in the loss of innocent civilian’s lives.”
