Ailing tot’s dad in bid to be MLA
The father of a seriously ill Magherafelt toddler has revealed he will stand in May’s Assembly elections in a desperate bid to save his daughter’s life.
Gary McCann’s daughter Katie Maguire suffers from a rare form of epilepsy, has Cerebral Palsy and is blind. The three-year-old tot was at the centre of a massive fund-raising campaign, backed by the Belfast Telegraph, three years ago to raise cash for her treatment in a US hospital.
The toddler spent almost a year at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago where she underwent a programme of treatment.
Mr McCann said health bosses have broken a string of promises to provide therapies for his daughter since they returned home over a year ago. Now the doting dad says he has been forced to stand for election in Mid Ulster in a bid to force health chiefs to provide adequate treatment.
Mr McCann said: “Every family is affected by the failing health service. We have to do something about it and that is why I have chosen to stand in this election.”
