Gemma: I'll make Westminster sexy

The Belfast beauty Queen with Commons touch

Belfast beauty queen Gemma Garrett last night told how she is hoping to make British politics "sexy not sleazy" by standing for election to Westminster.

The 26-year-old, who is currently Miss Great Britain, will fight in the by-election in the Labour seat of Crewe and Nantwich for the newly formed Beauties for Britain party.

The busty blonde, reported to be dating footballer Shaun Wright-Phillips, said she wanted to make Westminster less "dowdy and down-trodden" by bringing beauty into the seat of power.

Yesterday, Gemma launched her election bid at Westminster's College Green, before visiting the Cheshire constituency where she hopes to stand as a Member of Parliament.

The seat was left vacant following the death of Labour MP Gwyneth Dunwoody, the party's longest-serving female MP.

Launching her campaign, Gemma said she hoped to tackle issues such as child care being made tax deductible, however the main thrust of her campaign would be "putting beauty back in Britian".

"At the moment, much of our political life looks dowdy and down-trodden, " she said.

"Women are reluctant to put a proper emphasis on beauty and I want to change that.

"I want Westminster to be home to as many glamorous and confident women as say, Rome or Paris. Or even Brussels or Berlin.

"And I want that new emphasis on beauty to extend into every aspect of British life.

"If women should look and feel beautiful it makes Britian a happier place."

Gemma said she also intended to fire up people's interests in politics again and to "end the tide of sleaze".

"I want to see politics rapidly becoming sexy instead of sleazy," she said.

Female politicians came under the spotlight recently following the visit to the UK by President Sarkozy of France and his wife, model Carla Bruni.

Among the politicians adding a touch of glamour to the French parliament are Justice Minister Rachida Dati and Culture Minister Christine Abanel, both of whom favour designer clothes and regular beauty treatments.

Gemma will be joined on the campaign trail by Robert de Keyser, the chairman of the Miss Great Britian contest as her political advisor.
