Assembly to be recalled to finish financial business
Friday, 3 July 2009
The Assembly will be recalled next week to complete financial business it failed to finish ahead of its summer recess.
Last Tuesday was to be the final sitting of the full Assembly until the summer recess ends in September.
But the Executive is set to recall MLAs for a further session next week, though ministers have yet to decide which day the meeting will take place.
The move comes after a row broke-out earlier this week when outgoing Finance Minister Nigel Dodds was unable to provide details of the June budgetary statement, where unspent funds are redistributed around government departments.
The Assembly's Executive met today and Ministers discussed the plan to recall MLAs next week to discuss the quarterly funding re-allocation.
The SDLP said it expected an announcement soon, which was welcomed by the party's Assembly Group leader Alban Maginness.
He said: "It is vital that members get the chance to discuss and debate this very important process.
"To act otherwise would be inexcusable. We anticipate an announcement that the Assembly will come back early next week soon."
He added: "In the current economic climate politicians have to be seen to be doing their jobs and doing their utmost to create measures that can help."
Sinn Fein chief whip in the Assembly Caral Ni Chuilin said it was important that the financial redistribution be finalised and discussed by the Assembly.
She said: "This information is crucial to the work that we all do in the Assembly and on its committees and not to have the opportunity to debate the outcomes and question the effects of these decisions given the current economic crisis and departmental shortfalls is extremely poor practice."
As a result of the recent DUP ministerial reshuffle it is the party's newly nominated Finance Minister Sammy Wilson who is now responsible for the issue.
Today's Executive meeting at Stormont Castle was the first involving the DUP's new ministerial line-up.
The DUP team led by First Minister Peter Robinson included Junior Minister Robin Newton, Culture Minister Nelson McCausland, Finance Minister Sammy Wilson, Environment Minister Edwin Poots and Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster.
Mr Robinson said he expected his new team to help sell the achievements of the power-sharing administration to the electorate in the wake of a poor DUP election performance in the European Parliament election.

Why is the Northern Ireland assembly getting off for 2 months during these very trying economic times is anybody's guess they should get 2 weeks like everyone else and take it alternately so as there is always some one there. Imagine the fire brigade , hospitals (nurses and doctors), police service got off for the 2 months of summer. This is a disgrace since after all they had a 5 month break last year.
