Balancing act a challenge for Robinson

Political Correspondent Noel McAdam argues Peter Robinson’s proposals, while fraught with difficulty, are worthy of consideration

Wednesday, 9 September 2009

Peter Robinson can come in for criticism for wearing his First Minister’s hat to push a DUP wish-list.

The DUP leader strutted the stage of a famous stomping ground for unionist leaders - the Ulster Hall - yesterday to formally welcome his former Scottish counterpart, ex-Edinburgh First Minister Jack McConnell to a seminar. Its theme was how devolution can deliver with Mr McConnell seeing how the Scottish Executive at least partially achieved what the Stormont Executive has arguably yet to attempt - how to improve the public perception of its performance.

Mr Robinson has made no secret of the fact that his party is unhappy with the current Stormont mechanisms and arrangements and intends to move towards more “normalised” democracy.

In his view that will mean dropping the current ‘community designation’ under which MLAs are labelled unionist or nationalist or ‘other’ and would require a whole new voting system.

The aim would be to end the inertia which currently dogs the entire Belfast administration and ensure that no one party can automatically veto a proposal - even in circumstances where other parties have achieved a majority.

But there would be many problems. The current political structures reflect a divided society, the need to protect minorities is enshrined in both the spirit and mechanisms of the Good Friday and St Andrews Agreements, and the two governments understandably settle for slow progress rather than no progress. But if Sinn Fein in particular can be persuaded change is not designed to exclude republicans - and, in the short term at least, that is a tall order - the First Ministers’ proposals merit serious consideration.

If people could only look inside their hearts, to see what is right and wrong, then some good decisions could be made. I believe Mr Robinson is a big enough Man and a good enough Christan to do this!

Let's not just dismiss this because it's the DUP and Peter Robinson who are putting it forward. It could very well work to everyone's benefit, if it can be assured that it won't just be a re-run of pre-1972 Stormont where the Unionist majority weaved a reign of terror on the minority.

If the Alliance Party are in favour - not exactly purveyors of sectarian interests - I think the project should be seriously looked at.

Why my kids feel Olympics are not the real thing now

I did quite well in my school exams, but the only thing for which I can confidently say I stood out like a beacon among my fellow pupils was my record-breaking 100-metres dash.

World must open its eyes and see Israel for what it is

Why pick on Israel when there's so much injustice in the rest of the world? The answer is to be found in the specific circumstances which gave rise to the launch of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign in July 2005.

PR machine is driving Sinn Fein power push

Sinn Fein's ard fheis opens in Killarney tomorrow. Like most conferences held by successful political parties, it is a well-managed set-piece. It is a PR event and it is aimed at the voters watching on TV.

Nurse, the screens! Yup, top experts have issued new warnings about kiddies watching nothing but tellies and computers, while real life flits by unnoticed outside.
