Bertie Ahern breaks his leg in stairs fall

Wednesday, 22 October 2008

Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern suffered a broken leg after he slipped and fell down stairs.

The fall happened at about noon in north Dublin yesterday, although it is not clear whether Mr Ahern was in his constituency office or his home at the time.

His brother, councillor Maurice Ahern, last night confirmed that he was out of hospital but on crutches and was “sore”.

He said that “he seemed to be fine” but joked that he neglected to ask his brother if he had fallen, or if he was pushed.

A Fianna Fáil spokewoman said: “He has fractured his leg after falling down some stairs. It was an accident.”

It is reported that he will not miss the crucial Dáil vote on the medical card controversy tonight.

Brown can't even stick to his own nonsense on Afghanistan

Bit by bit, as happened with Iraq, the reasons for staying in Afghanistan slide into gibberish. So Gordon Brown's reasons for the war seem to change every week.

Cannabis: it’s time to stop the lies and start a rational debate

It doesn't require a Leap of faith to support the growing calls for a radical rethink of policy on drugs and in particular on the decriminalisation of cannabis.

We're stuck with the Assembly . . . and it's no laughing matter

A few evenings ago the Minister of Health at Stormont, Michael McGimpsey, was to be seen on the television news offering his audience what he termed a 'joke'.
