Alliance leader David Ford MLA has paid tribute to one of Northern Ireland’s longest serving public representatives, former Alliance councillor Jim McBriar.

Mr McBriar, who died on Monday, served on Ards Borough Council for 38 years, from when it was formed in 1973 until 2011.

Mr Ford described Mr McBriar as a committed public servant.

“He worked tirelessly to improve community relations in the Ards area and right across Northern Ireland. On behalf of the Alliance Party I would like to pass on my condolences to his wife Jenny and his children,” he said.

Mr McBriar was made a Freeman of the Borough in 2011.

He was only the fifth individual to be admitted to the Honourary Roll of Burgesses since the Freedom was first conferred in 1948.
