Teenagers took to the streets to encourage young voters in the election

Teenagers took to the streets to encourage young voters to take part in the election.

Youngsters wearing animal masks and black hoodies handed out postcards outside Sutton station in south London explaining why people should vote.

Musician Patrick Walden, who was handed one of the leaflets, said: "I'd say only 30% to 40% of my friends have bothered to register themselves to vote. It's really good to see young people taking the initiative and trying to show others that politics does matter."

A-level student Anne Attipoe, 18, said they wanted people to stop and think.

She said: "We're not telling people who they should vote for, we're simply trying to show them why they should vote."

Electoral Commission figures show 22% of students are not registered to vote and only 37% of 18- to 24-year-olds voted in 2005.

Why my kids feel Olympics are not the real thing now

I did quite well in my school exams, but the only thing for which I can confidently say I stood out like a beacon among my fellow pupils was my record-breaking 100-metres dash.

PR machine is driving Sinn Fein power push

Sinn Fein's ard fheis opens in Killarney tomorrow. Like most conferences held by successful political parties, it is a well-managed set-piece. It is a PR event and it is aimed at the voters watching on TV.

Nurse, the screens! Yup, top experts have issued new warnings about kiddies watching nothing but tellies and computers, while real life flits by unnoticed outside.
