Ian Paisley Jr celebrates with DUP Party memebrs after taking the North Antrim seat at the election count in the Seven Towers Leisure Centre in Ballymena

After a historic set of general election results in Northern Ireland, these are some of the quotes from a night of political drama:

"You should always be careful what you wish for in politics"

Defeated DUP leader Peter Robinson after pointing out that he personally hadn't wanted to run again for Westminster.

"Every dark cloud has a silver lining"

Keith McGrellis only took 223 votes in Foyle and lost his deposit, but said he won £2,500 after putting £25 at odds of 100/1 for Naomi Long to beat Peter Robinson.

"F*** off. You have been working for this for 18 months"

A senior DUP member to the journalist Eamonn Mallie after Peter Robinson's defeat was confirmed in east Belfast. The DUP figure later apologised for his outburst at the Kings Hall, Belfast.

"I know I'm starting to sound like Barry McGuigan, but I really do want to thank my family"

Democratic Unionist Jim Shannon after repeatedly thanking his family during his victory speech.

"I think us and the Conservatives and Unionists have taken a little bit of a bloody nose"

Former journalist and now defeated Conservative and Unionist candidate Mike Nesbitt understates his party's performance in Northern Ireland.

"The result is a symbol of the esteem in which she is held by the people of North Down"

Defeated UCUNF (Ulster Conservatives and Unionists - New Force) candidate Ian Parsley acknowledging Lady Sylvia Hermon's emphatic victory in North Down.

"I have no time to celebrate any of our party's successes. I have been acting as a tally man at a count in Banbridge and am heading to the airport to catch the first flight to London to be a tally man for my son who is also called Conor. He is standing as a Labour candidate in the council election in Islington"

Sinn Fein politician Conor McGinn.

"It's a kinda magic"

BBC anchor Noel Thompson on one of his reporters' striking resemblance to defeated UCUNF candidate and Freddie Mercury impersonator Harry Hamilton.

"How long have I been elected? It is now 2.30am, So I have only been elected for an hour and you want me to give it up? Give me a chance"

Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams, 61, when asked if this would be the last time he stood in a British General Election.

Why keep qouting Gerry's age ?

Why my kids feel Olympics are not the real thing now

I did quite well in my school exams, but the only thing for which I can confidently say I stood out like a beacon among my fellow pupils was my record-breaking 100-metres dash.

World must open its eyes and see Israel for what it is

Why pick on Israel when there's so much injustice in the rest of the world? The answer is to be found in the specific circumstances which gave rise to the launch of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign in July 2005.

PR machine is driving Sinn Fein power push

Sinn Fein's ard fheis opens in Killarney tomorrow. Like most conferences held by successful political parties, it is a well-managed set-piece. It is a PR event and it is aimed at the voters watching on TV.

Why bringing up our kids should be child's play... or maybe it's not

Nurse, the screens! Yup, top experts have issued new warnings about kiddies watching nothing but tellies and computers, while real life flits by unnoticed outside.
