Executive meeting is cancelled amid crisis

By Noel McAdam
Tuesday, 22 July 2008

The Stormont Executive crisis deepened today as this week’s meeting — the first in more than a month — was formally called off.

The postponement, confirmed by the Executive secretariat, means the Executive is unlikely to meet until September — a gap of three months.

A spokesman for the Office of First and Deputy First Minister said, however: “The work of government is still going on across all 11 departments.

“And there are procedures in place to deal with any urgent issues, including an Executive meeting if need be.”

The cancellation is confirmation of a growing stand-off between the DUP and Sinn Fein at the heart of government over a date for the transfer of policing and justice powers to the Assembly, an Irish language act and the Maze stadium blueprint.

SDLP leader Mark Durkan said his party would demand a recall of the Assembly if the Executive meeting was again delayed.

Its all very well playing party politics but this only hides the reality that our MLA's for the most part have no idea of how to run a country even one of this size. I mean what background and experience have they of running any business enterprise never mind policing and justice education and environment etc.
The UK has poured billions into this place the ROI is now helping out with money for improved infrastructure. The USA has invested heavily and given of their time at the highest level and our lot of glorified councilors on the hill at stormont are making a real mess of it. The people all of the people here deserve better. Wake up and push on with what needs to be done to represent a people who considering the comments here are more prepared for change than you lot.

Its a shame this is happening,do these people not realise there are so many people in our country sitting waiting on them to make decisions, 30 papers are waiting to be discussed, one of which is pps14 which we have been waiting a long time for someone to make a decision about! i think they should only be getting paid if they are making decisions for our country.

I've had enough of these bunch of clowns, lets get rid of them all. When they have no money coming in they may take time to reflect on the time they had to do the job in hand. They can't even get their heads round a new football pitch, i'm surprised they can make up their minds as to what clothes to put on in the morning.

Too many people died here from all sides for these clowns to mess it up again and again.

Justin, I'm afraid we do not agree, I do not think that NI is a failing entity, far from it, I think that NI has shown great strength to get to where we are, however, what I am saying is, that NI politicians on all sides are weak and under qualified for the role’s they hold, and until we have politicians who really want to represent the true views of a mixed population will actually have decent policies on education, health, environment etc. Until this is the case, they SHOULD NOT have the power to decide on policing and other very important issues. Show us that you are capable of making good decisions on the issues you currently have power for, like education, which is turning into a farce and will jeopardise the future education of the young people of NI and will only leave NI at a disadvantage in industry in years to come.

Robert Scott is right....N Ireland is a failed entity in every respect....there is no parity of esteem for Nationalists under an internal settlement...we have returned to pre-1969 ...why don't our representatives have the guts to just walk away!!!!!!!!! What is there to talk about, this was all a done deal at St Andrews!!!!!!!!

Although I do not agree with the DUP on almost anything, which has only been further strengthened by Iris Robinson's recent comments. The executive not meeting is a clear indication that Northern Ireland is not ready for powers on such things as policing, lets start doing real politics and prove to the rest of the world that we have moved on and are serious about working together.

This just proves yet again what a shambles this current administration is.

Call an election now and let the people get rid of this disasterous setup

Cannabis: it’s time to stop the lies and start a rational debate

It doesn't require a Leap of faith to support the growing calls for a radical rethink of policy on drugs and in particular on the decriminalisation of cannabis.

We're stuck with the Assembly . . . and it's no laughing matter

A few evenings ago the Minister of Health at Stormont, Michael McGimpsey, was to be seen on the television news offering his audience what he termed a 'joke'.

Opinion: Why should I have to wear a poppy?

It's Poppy Week, which means if you don't wear a poppy all week you're a filthy, dirty, low-life, scummy traitor.
