MLAs facing backlog of Bills

Assembly Members may have to sit for several extra days to deal with a deluge of legislation, it has emerged.

With just seven weeks left before the current administration dissolves on March 25, MLAs may have to add on more plenary sessions, probably on Wednesdays.

Otherwise they face lengthy sittings on the current plenary days, Mondays and Tuesdays, perhaps late into the night.

Members of the all-party business committee, which draws up the Assembly agenda, are meeting this afternoon but may not make a final decision for another few weeks.

Assembly Speaker William Hay (above) said: “It might not prove possible but I think we are going to have to look at holding extra sittings, not just as a one-off but over several weeks.”
