Over 30 library posts face axe in cuts plan

More than 30 full-time library jobs are under threat, it has emerged.
But the redundancies — the result of cuts to Stormont’s budget — are likely to hit part-time workers worst.
The cutbacks come on top of plans to reduce library opening hours and proposals to shut as many as 10 libraries.
The Assembly’s culture, arts and leisure committee heard about the latest impact of spending cuts on jobs.
The libraries authority, Libraries NI, told members that as part of its cost-cutting exercise to save £10.3m over the next four years, library staffing hours could be cut by 1,200 hours per week.
“This equates to 33 full-time posts. However, as many library workers are part-time, the impact will be even greater and will greatly affect the predominantly female workforce,” a statement added afterwards.
DUP committee chair Michelle McIlveen said: “This is a further blow to library services in Northern Ireland, and will have a significant impact on frontline services.”
