Sir Reg Empey will make public his intentions on the UUP leadership today amid speculation that he will stay at the party's helm for a limited period.

The internal debate over his future is becoming increasingly caught up in the wider controversy over whether the Ulster Unionists should retain their link-up with the Conservatives.

A party source last night said supporters of the Tory connection are to the fore in pressing Sir Reg to stay on.

His leadership has been the subject of speculation since he failed to oust the DUP's Rev Willie McCrea as South Antrim MP.

The Conservative link also came under fire after the General Election left the UUP with no representation in the Commons.

Sir Reg will make a statement on his future after a meeting of the party's executive in Templepatrick today.
