Survey shows population backs devolution

Tuesday, 16 September 2008

Most people support devolving policing and justice powers to Northern Ireland within the next year, a government survey has revealed..

With Prime Minister Gordon Brown arriving in Belfast today for talks with local politicians, new polling showed 58% backed handing down security powers from Westminster.

That is a key demand of Sinn Fein, which has been refusing to attend ministerial Executive meetings in protest at alleged lack of progress.

There have been fears power-sharing could collapse if a backlog stretching to June isn't tackled on Thursday.

Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward said: ``For the third time the polls show that the people of Northern Ireland, from across the communities, are devolutionists.

``They want to see policing and justice powers transferred from Westminster to Stormont. They want to see the process of devolution, which they voted for in March 2007, completed.''

Mr Woodward's Northern Ireland Office (NIO) has consistently pressed for the move, even though a deadline of last May was missed.

No Justice. No Investment!

Why my kids feel Olympics are not the real thing now

I did quite well in my school exams, but the only thing for which I can confidently say I stood out like a beacon among my fellow pupils was my record-breaking 100-metres dash.

World must open its eyes and see Israel for what it is

Why pick on Israel when there's so much injustice in the rest of the world? The answer is to be found in the specific circumstances which gave rise to the launch of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign in July 2005.

PR machine is driving Sinn Fein power push

Sinn Fein's ard fheis opens in Killarney tomorrow. Like most conferences held by successful political parties, it is a well-managed set-piece. It is a PR event and it is aimed at the voters watching on TV.

Nurse, the screens! Yup, top experts have issued new warnings about kiddies watching nothing but tellies and computers, while real life flits by unnoticed outside.
