UUP leader Sir Reg Empey has formally written to the DUP accepting its invitation to talks on a potential election pact.
But no date or venue has yet been agreed for the meeting between the two parties.
Respective delegations would meet urgently, however, if Prime Minister Gordon Brown called a sudden General Election, to discuss constituencies where a deal could maximise the unionist vote.
There has been speculation one of the parties could stand down in South Belfast and the other in Fermanagh South Tyrone, for example.
