Prince Philip spends second night in hospital

Published 05/04/2008

The Duke of Edinburgh has spent a second night in hospital with a chest infection, Buckingham Palace confirmed today.

A spokeswoman said Prince Philip was taken to the King Edward VII's Hospital in central London for "assessment and treatment for a chest infection".

Prince Philip, 86, did not attend a thanksgiving service for Everest conqueror Sir Edmund Hillary on Wednesday because he was taken ill with a cold, Buckingham Palace said.

Yesterday's statement from the Palace said: "The Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to the King Edward VIIth hospital for assessment and treatment for a chest infection.

"His Royal Highness's programme of engagements for the weekend have been cancelled."

None of the prince's engagements next week have been cancelled. On Monday, he is due to attend a council meeting at Windsor Castle and a dinner to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel.

He is also scheduled to accompany the Queen to an engagement at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth on Thursday.
