Events to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising will include art exhibitions, theatre projects and musical tours.

The heads of 31 local authorities met in Dublin to launch the programme, which will mark the 100th anniversary of the Rising.

Each county presented their plan of activities to Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Tánaiste Joan Burton at the special event in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham.

The programme includes more than 1,800 events, including the planting of 500 trees by scout groups from Co Wicklow over 16 acres to commemorate those who died in the Rising.

"The story and events of 1916 belongs to all of us, regardless of political or family background, or personal interpretation of our modern history," Mr Kenny said.
