8m illegal cigarettes found at port
A chilled container carrying 3.1 million euro worth of illegal cigarettes has been seized in Dublin Port.
Customs said about 8 million cigarettes, branded Top Mountain, Bon International, Royal and Jim, were found in the shipment from Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
The consignment was uncovered on Sunday after being checked by a mobile scanner.
Customs said the container had been described as chilled foodstuffs and the black market cargo was packed into boxes labelled Garlic & Cheese Tear & Share.
An Irish-registered lorry and a refrigerated trailer were also seized.
The driver, an Irish man in his mid-40s, was interviewed by Customs.
Some 89.5 million contraband cigarettes have been seized by Revenue officials this year.
