Anti-war protesters condemn US support for dictators

Published 23/05/2011

Anti-war protesters yesterday sharply criticised US President Barack Obama for supporting "dictators" in the Middle East and of failing to promote peace.

Around 100 people turned up to a demonstration on O'Connell Street in Dublin yesterday.

Irish Anti-War Movement chairman and TD Richard Boyd Barrett told the small crowd that thousands of civilians continued to be killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr Boyd Barrett accused the US of arming and supporting dictators in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

"Barack Obama continues to support those dictators," he said. "The US fears democracy in the Middle East because they'll lose control of oil in that great region."

Protesters also demanded an end to the "siege" of Gaza by Israel, and an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
