Friends and family of an Irish nurse who helped save victims of the 'Batman' cinema massacre are in shock following her drowning death in the US.

Jennifer Ann Gallagher (46), from Duleek, in Co Meath, drowned while swimming in a lake near Denver, Colorado on August 7. She leaves a five-year-old son Jack and partner Greg Pinson.

Ms Gallagher was among those praised by President Barack Obama for helping to save the lives of people injured when a gunman opened fire at the midnight premiere of 'The Dark Knight Rises' in a Denver suburb on July 20.

James Holmes has been charged in connection with the incident that left 12 people dead.
