Biker ‘killed after hitting safety bale’

Published 11/05/2011

A father-of-three was killed during a high speed motorcycle race when he lost control of his motorbike and hit a safety bale, an inquest heard yesterday.

Victor Gilmore (42) was competing in the 600cc event in the Killalane Road Race at Skerries, Co Dublin, on September 12, 2010, when the accident happened.

Dublin City Coroner's Court heard it was a high speed race with competitors travelling at speeds in excess of 100mph.

Mr Gilmore was pronounced dead at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin and a post-mortem found he died of multiple injuries including chest injuries.

The coroner Dr Brian Farrell recorded a verdict of death by misadventure, reflecting the fact that the incident occurred during a competitive race.
