Bob Geldof has urged every Irish person living in Britain to vote to remain in the European Union.

The singer, activist and businessman has also called on fellow expatriates to make sure they register by June 7.

In a video posted on YouTube, the former Boomtown Rats front man lists off who he will personally encourage to back the remain side in the in/out referendum on June 23.

"My mate Maguire in Birmingham, my sister Patty up in the Wye Valley, Ted in Islington, the kids in north, south and east London," he says.

"Ah, every Irish person: Vote!"

The video was made by the Irish4Europe group for its #PhoneAFriend campaign.

The initiative is trying to persuade Irish people to contact their compatriot friends living in UK to register and vote against leaving the EU.

Hundreds of thousands of Irish people living in Britain are eligible to vote.

David D'Arcy, of Irish4Europe, said: "Our campaign asking Irish people in the UK to consider the barriers a Brexit would bring between Britain, Ireland and Northern Ireland.

"Our nations have worked hard through painful decades to reach an all-time high in our relations. Now is not the time for barriers."
