Body hunt after car's cliff plunge

A search is under way for a body off the coast of Co Clare after a car was seen going over a cliff.

Divers have been sent to the scene in Kilkee, with a search and rescue team from Doolin.

Gardai said a car was seen plunging into the water at about 12.50am this morning.

A spokesman for the Coast Guard confirmed navy divers would inspect the car this afternoon in a bid to find the body.

It is understood there was one occupant in the car when it went into the water at Byrne's Cove - a popular swimming spot.

The Kilkee Coast Guard Unit and a helicopter were sent to the cliffs area.

The vehicle was found during a search in the early hours, which was called off and later resumed at daylight.

"We got a call late last night from a member of the public who actually saw the car go into the sea," the spokesman said.

"A search operation got under way and the gardai were informed."
