Body of missing man found on farm

The body of a missing man for almost a week has been found on his own farm.

Gerard Tierney, 40, vanished from Smithboro in Co Monaghan, close to the border with Northern Ireland, on August 29th.

A Garda spokesman said the body of a male found earlier in Smithboro has been identified as Mr Tierney.

It is understood it was recovered by search teams in a slurry or silage pit.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and investigators are examining if it was accidental.

The remains have been removed to Cavan General Hospital for a post-mortem.
