Boy drowns in Drogheda reservoir
The body of a young teenager has been recovered from a reservoir.
The search for the 13-year-old boy, a local teen, was ongoing since emergency services received a call shortly before 4pm on Thursday.
A body was recovered from the reservoir shortly before 5pm, Independent.ie reports.
The boy had been swimming with a group of friends at the reservoir located at Rosehall, Drogheda, Co Louth.
Locals had reported a search helicopter to be circling the area for approximately an hour.
Emergency services and the Coastguard attended the scene during the search.
The area is heavily secured, with tall fences around the perimeter.
It is not yet known how the children gained access to the site.
Mayor of Drogheda Kevin Callan told local radio station LMFM: “The news today is truly saddening. It’s a very sad day for Drogheda. I’m shocked to hear a young boy has lost his life in a reservoir enjoying the sun with his friends.”
“The people of the town will be doing everything they can to help, it’s a very sad day for Drogheda.”
