Cigarette haul worth €140,000 seized in blitz
Irish customs officers seized 320,000 cigarettes after a raid on an isolated shed yesterday.
Armed with a search warrant, officers swooped on a house in Co Monaghan in a targeted operation and uncovered the haul.
The find brought the total number of illegal cigarettes recovered by Revenue teams in the past fortnight to more than 14 million after a nationwide blitz involving over 250 officers.
Officers believe the shed was being used as a storage depot by organised smugglers but have not revealed details of its location because of an ongoing inquiry.
The haul had a potential retail value of €140,000 and represented a potential loss to the Exchequer of €121,000.
