Cost of living eases back in April

The cost of living eased back last month, official figures have revealed.

The annual rate of inflation edged down to 1.9% in April, its lowest rate since the start of last year.

The Central Statistics Office report showed that home furnishings, small electrical goods and maintenance work saw the biggest falls followed by charges for some technology goods and toys, clothing and footwear and communications.

The biggest cost increases over the year were in education with prices and fees up 9.4% and transport up 5.7% as a result of rising fuel charges.
