Costello to fight European election

Labour's Emer Costello has been nominated to fight the European elections in Dublin.

She has been MEP for the city for the last two years.

Her selection was rubber-stamped at Liberty Hall this afternoon. Party leader and Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore, and deputy leader Joan Burton, attended along with other Labour party ministers and Oireachtas members.

The former teacher from Blackrock in Co Louth is married to Joe and the couple live in Stoneybatter in Dublin 7.

Ms Costello said: "As Lord Mayor and now as MEP, I have always championed the cause of Dublin.

"And I am passionate and optimistic about Dublin's future, about Ireland's future and about Europe's future.

"The Labour Party has a strong tradition of representing the people of Dublin in Europe. I am honoured that you have endorsed me unanimously today to be the Labour Party candidate in the forthcoming European elections on 23 May."
