Simon Deadman certainly didn't live up to his surname after winning the top prize in one of the poker world's most prestigious tournaments in Ireland at the weekend.

The 24-year-old professional poker player from Nottingham, England, took home €67,500 in winnings from the World Poker Tour's (WPT) first national tournament in 2013 at Dublin's Citywest Hotel last night.

Mr Deadman had 750,000 chips and was in fourth when the tournament's top eight players sat down to play yesterday.

Mr Deadman said he plans to celebrate his first Dublin win with a pint or two.

"It's always fun playing in Dublin,"he said. "If you go bust, you go on the beer."

Dubliner Sean Prendiville also had reason to celebrate after the Ballinteer native won the third highest prize of €30,250. But he wasn't the only Irishman at the final table.

Tommy O'Rourke from Limerick went home with €13,750 after coming sixth, while Galway's Fintan Gavin won €8,900 after coming 8th.
