The body of a woman (36) has been recovered after a car went off a pier in Co Donegal on Saturday.

The alarm was raised by another motorist at around 12.30pm on Saturday.

They witnessed the incident at the pier just outside Kerrykeel on the Fanad peninsula.

It's understood the vehicle is a Fiat Punto and the woman is from the local area.

It has been reported that a local teenager tried desperately to save the woman.

Mulroy Coast Guard, the Sligo 118 rescue helicopter, Garda and expert divers were involved in a major search operation following the reports.

The tragedy comes just months after A Co Londonderry family died when their car went into the water from Buncrana, Co Donegal.

Sean McGrotty and his sons, Mark, 11, and Evan, eight, mother-in-law Ruth Daniels, and her teenage daughter Jodie, died after their car slid into water.

Four-month old Rionaghac-Ann was the only survivor who was rescued by passer-by Davitt Walsh.
