Passers-by in a busy Dublin tourist district who videoed a serious assault on their smartphones are being asked to come forward with the evidence.

A man in his mid 20s is seriously ill after being set upon at Cow's Lane, in the bustling Temple Bar area, at around 8.45pm on Thursday.

The victim was taken to St James Hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.

Three men in their mid 20s were arrested at the scene, while a fourth man, aged in his 30s, was detained later in connection with the serious assault.

They are being questioned at Pearse Street, Irishtown and Kevin Street Garda stations under section four of the Criminal Justice Act. Investigating gardai said they believe some people in Temple Bar at the time of the attack recorded the assault on their phones.

They have appealed for the witnesses to come forward.
