Dublin Marathon runner (23) dies in race
A runner who died of a suspected heart attack in a half marathon was due to celebrate his 24th birthday yesterday.
John McHugh collapsed close to the finishing line in Phoenix Park, Dublin. Runners performed CPR on him until medics from the St John's Ambulance took over.
But the crew was unable to save him and he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital.
Dublin's Belvedere College, where Mr McHugh was vice-captain before leaving in 2010, paid tribute to him in a statement.
It read: "John has been taken all too quick, but those of us lucky enough to know him can consider ourselves privileged. He embodied all the qualities of a true man."
