A man is in a serious condition after being shot in Dublin on Friday afternoon.

A man, believed to be in his 50s, was approached by a lone gunman and shot a number of times at around 4.10pm.

It is understood that the man suffered serious head and chest injuries after the shooting on Bridgefoot Street, Dublin 8.

The injured man was been taken to St James Hospital. He is believed to be from Cabra and was the target of a previous assassination attempt.

Locals reported hearing up to six shots. The area has been sealed off for technical examination and a gun has reportedly been recovered at the scene.

A silver Mercedes was found on fire in the Liberties area.
