A 53-year-old woman has drowned after falling into the sea off Co Clare.

The woman, understood to be from Eastern Europe, was swept out from the coast near the small village of Fanore around 8.40am on Sunday.

The Irish Coast Guard and other emergency services responded to the incident and a major search was triggered.

Gardai said the woman was recovered from the water around 10am and flown to University Hospital Galway, where she was later pronounced dead.
