Father in plea over missing couple he fears were 'taken out'
The father of a man who vanished along with his girlfriend earlier this year believes they were "taken out", he has said.
Willie Maughan, 34, who was living in Balbriggan, north Dublin, and his 20-year-old Latvian girlfriend Anastasija Varslavane, known as Anna, were last seen on April 14.
They were in the Gormanston area of Co Meath between 2pm and 3pm.
Mr Maughan's father Joe said he was given a number to telephone after the pair's disappearance and was informed they had gone to Spain.
But he said he is now looking for their bodies to give them a "proper burial".
He said: "We have fears that my son was taken out, and his girlfriend was taken out."
Mr Maughan said his son is a fully qualified plumber, who he described as outgoing, jolly and good natured as well as a strong, powerful young man.
When he moved out of the family home about three years ago to Balbriggan, things started to "muck up", he said.
Mr Maughan said there are people in the community who know what happened to his son and Ms Varslavane, and he appealed to them to clear their conscience.
"Come forward and clear you conscience, it is something you don't want to take to the grave with you," he said.
Willie Maughan's mother Helen broke down in tears as she made an emotional plea for information.
"I'd appeal if there's anyone out there with any kind of information concerning William and Anna please have it in your hearts to pick the phone up and pass on that information," she said.
"No parents deserve to go through what we're going through.
"My family are just torn apart from this and all I'm saying is please have it in your heart, pick the phone up and end this misery and just let us have William and Anna back, please."
She added: "As a mother I'm just asking and pleading, just pick the phone up and give me my child back and give me Anna back, please."
Gardai have renewed an appeal for information on the whereabouts of the couple.
Ms Varslavane, who had been living in Ireland for a number of years, is described as 5ft 6in, of slim build, with long dark hair. Mr Maughan is described as 5ft 8in, of athletic build, with shaved head and green eyes.
"It is not known what he was wearing when last seen," a Garda spokesman said.
Both were "known to frequent Balbriggan, Stamullen and Gormanston areas", the spokesman added. Since their disappearance an incident room has been set up at Ashbourne Garda station.
Superintendent James Cannon, who is heading the investigation, said: "We are extremely concerned for the welfare and safety of both William and Anna; it is completely out of character for them to go missing in this fashion."
